545,121. Rubber derivatives. SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH, HONORARY ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR. May 9, 1940, No. 8395. Convention date, June 2, 1939. [Class 70] Rubber derivatives, suitable for bonding rubber to metal or other surfaces and as a basis for paints, varnishes or coatings, are prepared by milling sulphur or equivalent vulcanizing agent, such as selenium or tellurium, vulcanizing types of accelerators, &c. and one or more suitable conversion agents, into rubber, such as Hevea smoked sheet or pale crepe, forming relatively thin sheets, heating the sheets until the desired reaction takes place and then masticating the product to render it soluble in rubber solvents. The conversion agent may be an acid sulphate of aluminium, iron, alkali, metal, ammonium, or alkaline earth metal or an alum, or a sulphate of iron, copper, mercury, and cadmium, used with a weak acid such as phosphoric, oxalic, benzoic, tartaric, phthalic or salicylic acid. The sulphur may be added to the product obtained by mixing or milling a conversion agent into the rubber sheeting and heating, and the sulphur may be in the form of a vulcanizing type accelerator such as tetramethylthiuramdisulphide.
