Abstract

516,294. Purifying liquids. SAMUEL, J. O., and UNIFLOC REAGENTS, Ltd. June 29,1938, No. 19341. [Classes 46 and 111] [Also in Group V] A flocculating gel of the kind described in Specification 435,126 is prepared by agitating modified starch with an aqueoussolution of a neutral metallic salt at 20-70‹C., till a thick and gummy paste is obtained. Suitable salts zinc, magnesium or lithium chloride, or thiocyanates or calcium chloride mixed with zinc or magnesium chloride. Modified starches are produced by treating starch with acids, such as hydrochloric or nitric, alkalies, oxidising agents such as perchlorates, dichromates, permanganates or peroxides, and salts such as calcium, zinc or magnesium chloride or thiocyanates till the cell walls are weakened and then washing out or neutralizing the reagent. Modified starches sold under the . names "Ogwen powder," " Tapwata " or " Octopus " or under the Registered Trade Mark " Rex " may be used. Gelling is completed in to 2“ hours.
