Abstract

1476238 Intumescent fire-resistant coating compositions MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON Ltd 8 Sept 1975 [20 Sept 1974] 41062/74 Heading C3B An intumescent fire-resistant coating-composition comprises foaming agent(s) (A) encapsulated by a substance (B) impervious to water. (A) may be melamine phosphate. (B) may be an epoxy polymer. The capsules (C) may be of diameter 1-500 Ám. The composition may also comprise a "carbonific" material (D) to form foam-cell walls on heating; (D) may be contained in (C), or may be (B). Capsules (C) may be mixed with a conventional coating composition, e.g. a paint, or the surfaces to be protected may be treated with an adhesive, followed by coating with (C) or a composition containing (C). The coating composition or capsules (C) may contain glass, metal, or carbon fibres. Capsules (C) may be made by dispersing (A) in a solution of epoxy resin in an organic solvent, e.g. diacetone alcohol, followed by dispersing the dispersion in a water/organic solvent mixture to form droplets; the resin is then cured; more epoxy resin is added to form an outer shell, and after further curing the capsules are filtered off and air-dried. Coatings of the composition resist leaching of (A) on exposure to water.
