Abstract

A solid resinous composition containing a dispersion of silica is made by mixing a colloidal solution of silica in an organic solvent and a solution of a resin in an organic solvent, precipitating the resin as a solid gel by addition of ammonia, breaking up the gel, subjecting it to atmospheric drying, and grinding it to a powder. The resin used may be either natural, e.g. shellac, or artificial, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, acrylic or "Glyptal" (Registered Trade Mark) resins. The colloidal silica solution may be produced by hydration of ethyl silicate. Other inorganic compounds may be introduced into the silica-resin solutions, such as metallic chlorides, e.g. magnesium or copper chloride, as solutions in organic solvents, e.g. alcohol, and the whole gelled by addition of ammonia solution. Such colouring matters as ultramarine, organic dyestuffs or fluorescent compounds, may be added. The particles of the powdered product may be coated with a layer of protective material, as described in Specification 521,099, [Group XL]. If the resin is thermosetting, it may be cured.ALSO:A solid resinous composition containing a dispersion of silica is made by mixing a colloidal solution of silica in an organic solvent and a solution of a resin in an organic solvent, precipitating the resin as a solid gel by addition of ammonia, breaking up the gel, subjecting it to atmospheric drying, and grinding it to a powder.
