Abstract

Coloured uncatalysed resin (e.g. polyester, phenolic, or epoxide resin) may be added to sand in a quantity just sufficient to coat each grain and thoroughly mixed, a catalyst is added, and the sand broken down into grains. The colour may be added as a fine powder after addition of the catalyst but before curing. The grains may be polished in a tumbling mill. A greater quantity of coloured resin may be mixed with the sand to produce a solid coating, the catalyst is added, a sufficient quantity of soluble powder (e.g. calcium carbonate) is added to coat each grain and, after curing, the powder coating is removed with water, dilute acid or alkali, or other solvent. The grains are then washed and dried.
