Abstract
A fabric is coated with lead amalgam (in order to make a protective shield against radiation) by spraying it with molten lead, and then soaking in mercury. In an alternative method, the fabric is first coated with a cement containing synthetic rubber such as neoprene. An amalgam is prepared by mixing 100 parts by weight of lead with 100 parts of mercury at 300 DEG F. and allowing to cool, after which it is pressed to squeeze out 50 parts of the mercury. The remaining solid mass of amalgam is milled with neoprene cement, and the mercury previously squeezed out is mixed into it again in the form of fine droplets. This mixture is then spread over the neoprene cement coated on to the fabric. A final coating of cement may then be applied. U.S.A. Specification 2,884,018 is referred to.
