Abstract

Polyethylene is exposed to an ionizing radiation dosage ranging from 0,5 megareps up to that dosage which would cause "sufficient gelation" of the polyethylene, and the treated polyethylene mechanically worked at a temperature below its fluxing temperature until the gel content thereof is less than 1% by weight, "sufficient gelation" being such that the irradiated material when immersed in toluene at a temperature of from 85 DEG -95 DEG C. will swell to such an extent that it will just hold together in the form of swollen strip. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 774,161.
