Abstract

A water-soluble or water-compatible baking lacquer composition comprises (1) a copolymer prepared by the solution or emulsion polymerization of a monomeric mixture comprising (a) alkyl acrylates or methacrylates (b) hydroxyalkyl esters of a ,b -unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids; (c) acrylic or methacrylic acid; and if desired (d) other monomers, followed by neutralization with amines; and (2) water-soluble phenol-formaldehyde resins and/or water-soluble etherified urea and/or aminotriazine formaldehyde resins. Monomers exemplified are (a) butyl acrylate, 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate; (b) 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxypropyl butyl maleate; (c) acrylic acid, methacrylic acid; and (d) styrene. The monomers are either copolymerized in a mixed solvent butyl glycol/n-butanol in the presence, as a redox catalyst, of lauryl mercaptan with benzoyl peroxide or ditert-butyl peroxide, or copolymerized in aqueous emulsion using predominantly nonionic emulsifying agents and with potassium peroxydisulphate as catalyst. The copolymer is neutralized with triethylamine or triethanolamine. Components (2) exemplified are a methanol etherified melamine - formaldehyde resin, a phenol resol obtained by reacting 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxypheny propane with formaldehyde in alkaline solution, and mixtures of the two, and these are added as aqueous solutions to component (1).
