Abstract

Procedure for obtaining copolymer solutions (A) from (a) 50 to 99.5 percent by weight of (meth) acrylic esters of alkanols containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms, (b) 0.5 to 15 percent by weight of α, β olefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids with 3 to 24 carbon atoms, (c) 0 to 5 weight percent monoolefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids with 4 to 5 carbon atoms and (d) 0 to 30 percent by weight of other olefinically unsaturated monomers in aliphatic hydrocarbons with a boiling range of 50 to 150ºC that have, based on the copolymers (A), 1 to 20 percent by weight of modified melamine-formaldehyde resin (B) soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons that do not react with the copolymers (A) and, based on all solvents, 0 to 40 percent by weight of other organic solvents (C) with boiling points between 50 and 150ºC, characterized in that the copolymers (A) are reacted in solution in the aliphatic hydrocarbons at 30 to 150ºC with melamine-formaldehyde resins such that the ratio of copolymer (A) to melamine-formaldehyde resin modified in the reaction mixture may still contain up to 40 percent by weight of other solvents (C), referred to all solvents, is between 100: 1 to 100: 20 at the end of the reaction.
