Abstract
Copolymers having at least one unreacted epoxy radical and at least one carboxyl radical per molecule are prepared by reacting 45.0 to 97.5 parts by wt. of an epoxy resin having 2 radicals of the formula <FORM:1081295/C3/1> and 2.5 to 55.0 parts by wt. of an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or maleic anhydride with heating until the percentage change of acid value is more than 10% but less than 100% to form a reaction product, and then copolymerizing 0.1 to 50 parts by wt. of this reaction product with 50.0 to 99.9 parts by wt. of at least one other copolymerizable monomer, and terminating the copolymerization while the resulting resin is still hardenable. The first reaction step is preferably performed in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor and the second step in the presence of a chain-transfer agent. In the examples: esters of epoxy resins and acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or maleic anhydride are prepared in the presence of hydroquinone by reaction in bulk or in solution and are solution copolymerized in the presence or absence of lauryl mercaptan using benzoyl peroxide or perchloride as catalyst with methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate and optionally other monomers selected from acrylic acid, styrene, acrylamide and acrylonitrile. In Example 8 a copolymer of an acrylic ester of an epoxy resin, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile and acrylamide is methylolated by reaction with paraformaldehyde in the presence of triethylamine. The products may be compounded with further solvents and pigments to give coating compositions.ALSO:Substrates such as board or metals (e.g. iron plates) are coated (e.g. by pouring or spraying) with compositions comprising a copolymer of ethylenically copolymerizable monomers and an ester of an epoxy resin having 2 radicals of the formula <FORM:1081295/B1-B2/1> in the molecule and an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or maleic anhydride (see Division C3).
