Abstract

1,178,903. Coatings. ROHM & HAAS G.m.b.H. 4 April, 1967 [6 April, 1966], No. 15456/67. Heading B2K. [Also in Division C3] Film-forming compositions, which provide crosslinkable coatings, comprise (A) an aminoplast resin and (B) a novel copolymer having methylol ether, alcoholic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and being derived from a monomer mixture containing (a) methyl, ethyl and/ or propyl acrylate, (b) at least one acrylate ester having 4-10 carbon atoms in the alcohol moiety and (c) at least one methacrylate ester and/or styrene or a substituted styrene, each of which when polymerised by itself gives a "hard polymer" (Tg>50‹C), monomers a and b being present in a weight ratio of from 1:3 to 4:1 and the weight ratio of (a+b):C being from 3:1 to 1:2. The monomers from which the copolymer is derived preferably also include a methylol ether of an α, #-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid amide, an olefinically unsaturated ether or ester containing a free alcoholic OH group and an α, #-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid in order to provide the necessary functional groups in the copolymer. Specified as component (A) are reaction products of melamine, benzoguanamine, urea or thiourea with formaldehyde, or a formaldehyde-yielding substance, and an alcohol, e.g. a C 1 -C 5 primary aliphatic alcohol. The compositions may also contain a filler and/or pigment, e.g. TiO 2 , and a solvent, e.g. a butanol/aromatic hydrocarbon mixture. Coatings obtained with the compositions can be cured by the action of heat and/or a catalyst. The coating compositions can be applied to a substrate surface as a dry powder and baked thereon, or as a lacquer (e.g. for automobiles). In Examples, compositions in the form of lacquers are sprayed on to phosphatised iron sheets provided with a baked epoxide base and, after airing, the coatings are baked for 30 min. at 120‹C.
