Abstract

1401253 Copolymer VIANOVA KUNSTHARZ AG 5 Oct 1972 [5 Oct 1971] 46026/72 Heading C3P A copolymer for use in paints comprises (a) 65-90 parts of a C 1 or C 2 alkyl methacrylate; (b) 1-25 parts of a C 1 or C 2 alkyl acrylate; (c) 5-12 parts of a methylol ether of an α,#- ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; (d) 0À5-20 of a (meth) acrylic acid monoester of a C 2-4 glycol or a di- or triglycol derived from a C 2-4 glycol; (e) 0À1-3 parts of (meth)acrylic acid, the sum of (a) to (e) being 100. In examples (a) is methyl methacrylate, (b) is ethyl acrylate, (c) is butoxy methylmethacrylamide and (d) is hydroxyethyl methacrylate, tripropylene glycol monomethacrylate or butane diol mono-acrylate. The monomers are polymerized in solution in a zylene/butanol mixture using di-t-butyl peroxide as catalyst with optionally t-dodecyl mercaptan as molecular weight modifier. The copolymer solution is compounded with cellulose acetate butyrate, butyl-benzylphthalate, optionally a melamine formaldehyde resin pigment and further solvent to make paints.
