Abstract

1304960 Binder compositions for baking finishes BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK AG 26 June 1970 [27 June 1969] 31082/70 Heading C3P A baking finish contains, as binder, a mixture of (1) from 40 to 97% by weight of a copolymer containing polymerized units of (a) from 8 to 97À5% by weight of at least one ester of an α,#-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (b) 2 to 25% by wt. of S-vinyl thioethanol, (c) 0À1 to 19% by weight of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid and if desired (d) up to 55% by weight of at least one other copolymerizable olefinically unsaturated monomer not specified in (a) to (c) and (2) from 3 to 60% by weight of an aminoplast resin optionally mixed with another binder such as an epoxy resin, phenolic resin, an alkyd resin, a cellulose derivative or a polyacrylate. Component (a) is preferably an ester of a C 3-5 acid with a C 1-8 alcohol, and acid component (c) preferably contains 3-5 carbon atoms such as acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids. Half esters of the dicarboxylic acids with C 1-8 alcohols, may also be used. Optional monomer (d) may be selected from vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons, vinyl esters of aliphatic linear or branched C 2-11 monocarboxylic acids, N-vinyl amides, vinyl/ C 1-8 alkyl ethers, (meth)acrylonitrile, (math) - acrylamide and butadiene. The preferred monomer (d) is styrene. The aminoplast resin (2) may be, for example a melamine/ formaldehyde resin, optionally etherified with a C 1-4 alcohol. Examples are given using the preferred ingredients mentioned above. The compositions are coated on to deep drawn metal sheets.
