[Also in Division C3] The surface of an article has a permanent coating of a substantially, but incompletely, cured resin, and a further coating of a waterresistant, alkali-soluble polymer blend comprising 5-95% by weight of an inter polymer comprising 0.5 mole% to 20 mole% of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid containing 3-6 carbon atoms and 99.5 mole% to 80 mole% of a vinylidene ester of a saturated aliphatic acid containing 1-6 carbon atoms and 95-5% of a second interpolymer comprising a vinylidene aromatic hydrocarbon and an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated monomer which is a dicarboxylic acid, or its anhydride, a halfester of a dicarboxylic acid with an alcohol containing 1-18 carbon atoms or a mixture of these. The resin layer may be applied to the surface and the top layer is then applied before the first coating is fully cured. The cureable resin may be melamine-acrylic enamel, a phenolic, a polyurethane, a melamine-formaldehyde, a urea-formaldehyde or a maleic adduct of fatty acid esters of styrenearalcohol copolymers. Numerous suitable ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acids and vinylidene esters and vinylidene aromatic hydrocarbons are listed.
