[Also in Division C7] Compositions suitable for coating metal or other conductive articles by electrodeposition comprise aqueous solutions of pH 6À5 to 9 containing (I) a copolymer of (a) one or more esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid and a monohydric alcohol of up to 20 carbon atoms, (b) one or more mono- or poly-carboxylic α : #-ethylenically unsaturated acids containing up to 6 carbon atoms or a partial ester of such a polycarboxylic acid with a monohydric alcohol of up to 10 carbon atoms, optionally (c) up to 5% by weight of N-(hydroxyalkyl) amide or N-(oxaalkyl) amide of acrylic and (or methacrylic acid, and optionally (d) at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer, (II) an ester component which is an alkyd resin, a saturated and/or unsaturated fatty acidmodified alkyl resin, or an addition product of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid and an unsaturated oil or fat, (III) a phenoplast or aminoplast condensation product, and (IV) sufficient ammonia and/or water-soluble organic amino compound to bring the pH to within the range above. Preferably the copolymer I comprises by weight 20 to 95% of component (a), 5 to 20% of component (b), optionally up to 5% component (c), and optionally up to 75% of component (d); while the ratio by weight of components (I) and (II) is from 90 : 10 to 5 : 95, and of components (I), (II) & (III) is such that component (III) forms from 5 to 30% of the total of the three components. Pigments and fillers may be included in the composition in an amount up to 50% of the weight of the resin total and the solids content of the solution preferably does not exceed 40%. In examples the copolymer I comprises n-butyl acrylate, isobutyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate as component (a), acrylic acid as component (b), N- (hydroxymethyl) methacrylamide as component (c), and styrene or 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate as component (d); the ester (II) is a maleinized oil obtained by heating wood oil with fumaric acid and neutralizing with dimethyl ethanolamine; the condensation product (III) is a phenol-formaldehyde resin or a methylol melamine methyl ether; and the pigments and fillers are TiO 2 , red and yellow iron oxides, bone black, lamp black, china clay and silica aerogel. The electrodeposited coatings are baked at 170‹ to 180‹ C.
