Harnstoff-Formaldehyd-, Melamin - Formaldehyd - Kondensationsprodukt; IV.

Coating agents
The invention relates to coating agents for coating electrically conductive objects connected as anode by means of electrophoresis on the basis of optionally pigmented, aqueous solutions of acrylic compounds containing copolymers and of carboxyl groups containing, modified with saturated and / or unsaturated fatty acids polycondensation products from polyhydric alcohols and polycarboxylic acids that contain enough ammonia and / or basic organic nitrogen compounds that the pH value is at least 6.5.
The electrophoretic deposition of film-forming materials on metals and other electrically conductive objects has many advantages over the classic types of application, such as dipping, spraying or painting. After the object has been pulled out of the electrophoresis bath, the deposited coatings have the same layer thickness on all sides and from top to bottom. At the same time, it is possible to set the layer thicknesses to be deposited precisely in advance by selecting the current density and deposition time accordingly.
Electrophoretic deposition, however, depends on numerous factors, with electrolysis and electro-endosmosis also playing a role in addition to electrophoresis. The structure of the coating material used must take these factors into account.
It has already been proposed that organic compounds such as rubber, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylates and polyethylene compounds should be separated from their aqueous dispersions. For electrophoresis, however, the dispersions have to be very dilute, which results in considerable difficulties because dilute dispersions have only a limited shelf life. It is therefore disadvantageous that the more dilute they are, the faster the dispersions can separate.
It has also been described that alkyd resins can be electrophoretically deposited in the form of their aqueous solutions neutralized with ammonia or amines, alone or in combination with urea, melamine or phenolic resins. When the electrophoretic immersion bath is operated for a long period of time, such resin combinations tend to have a different deposition rate, as a result of which the film properties are adversely affected.
Attempts have also been made to separate acrylate resins from their aqueous solutions. It turned out, however, that the resin deposition around corners and edges is insufficient and, especially in the case of workpieces that have a somewhat complicated structure with a few cavities, such as car bodies and car doors, the ability of the resin particles to penetrate the cavities is low is. In addition, the known acrylate resin solutions are not stable under the influence of electrophoresis. The effect of this is that the separation becomes worse if the bath is used for a long time. The resulting coatings then show a rough and unsightly surface. This significantly hinders the technical use of acrylate resins for electrophoretic coating.
It has now been found that a coating composition based on optionally pigmented, aqueous solutions of acrylic compounds containing copolymers which contain so much ammonia and / or basic organic nitrogen compounds that the pH is at least 6.5 does not have these disadvantages characterized in that the coating agent comprises components I. a copolymer of a) 20 to 95 percent by weight of at least one ester of acrylic and / or methacrylic acid with a monohydric alcohol containing up to 20 carbon atoms, b) at least 5 to 20 percent by weight one one or divalent, o:
: Ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid containing up to 6 carbon atoms and / or at least one half ester of such a dibasic carboxylic acid with a monohydric alcohol containing up to 10 carbon atoms, and - optionally - additionally, c) up to 75 percent by weight of at least one other monoethylenically unsaturated comonomer .
II. A maleinized and / or fumarized oil or fat and / or an alkyd resin containing carboxyl groups and modified with saturated and / or unsaturated fatty acids, made from polyalcohols and polycarboxylic acids, optionally maleinized and / or fumarized; III. a water-soluble, curable phenol-formaldehyde.
Urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde - condensation product; IV. Water, which optionally contains up to 10 percent by weight of organic solvents; contains, where the weight ratio of component I to component II of 90% I: 1OCr, II up to 5% I: 957, II and also the weight ratio of the sum of components I + II to component III of 95% (I + II) : 5% III up to 70% (I + In): 30% III is.
Particularly suitable copolymers (component I) are those with a K value (according to H. Fikentscher, CSellulosechemie, Volume 13, 1932, pp. 58-64) of 15 to 40.
The following can be said in detail about the structural components a to c of the polymers: a) Particularly suitable esters are the methyl ester of methacrylic acid, as well as the ethyl, n-propyl, i-propyl, n-butyl, i- Butyl, tert-butyl and 2-ethylhexyl esters of acrylic acid. Also suitable are, for example, the 3-oxabutyl, 3-oxapentyl, 3-oxaheptyl, 3,6-dioxanonyl and 3,6-dioxadecyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid. Mixtures of esters are also suitable.
b) Acrylic and methacrylic acid are particularly suitable as carboxylic acids. Maleic, fumaric, itaconic, mesaconic and citraconic acids are also suitable, for example.
The half-esters of maleic and fumaric acid with the alcohols shown in a) above are suitable as half-esters. - Mixtures of carboxylic acids and / or half-esters are also suitable.
c) Other comonomers particularly suitable are styrene and oxyalkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, such as the 2-oxyethyl, 2-oxypropyl and 4-oxybutyl esters. Acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride, N-vinylpyrrolidone and alkylated or halogenated styrenes are also suitable, for example. Also suitable are - in relatively small amounts of not more than 5 percent by weight N- (oxyalkyl) or N- (oxaalkyl) - amides of acrylic or methacrylic acid. Mixtures of comonomers are also suitable.
The polymers can be produced by known methods; it is not the subject of the present invention. Suitable methods for producing the polymers are described, for example, in Methods of Organic Chemistry (Houben-Weyl), Volume XIV / 1, page 1044 ff. (Section), Stuttgart, (1961).
Alkyl resins modified with saturated and / or unsaturated fatty acids (component II) are known alkyd resins.
Alkyd resins are polyesters made from polyhydric alcohols such as glycerol, pentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane or hexanetriol, with polybasic saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, hydroaromatic or aromatic carboxylic acids such as phthalic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, maleic acid, hexachloro-tetrahydro-phthalic acid, hexachloro-tetrahydro-endo-methylene thalic acid, hexachloro-tetrahydro-phthalic acid and citric acid. The alkyd resins are generally characterized by the incorporation of saturated and / or unsaturated fatty acids, e.g. Linseed oil, castor oil, ricin oil, coconut oil, peanut oil, wood oil, oiticica oil, or cottonseed oil fatty acids modified. It is also possible to incorporate rosin and resin acids into the alkyd resin molecule.
The alkyd resins should still contain so many unesterified carboxyl groups that their acid number is more than 10 and that, together with the other components I, III and IV, they form a water-miscible solution.
It is also possible to use alkyd resins in which some of the polyalcohols have been replaced by polyethyleneglycols and which are made water-soluble in this way.
Maleinized alkyd resins are customary adducts which are obtained in a known manner by reacting alkyd resins with maleic acid, maleic anhydride and / or fumaric acid.
Maleinized oils and fats are addition products of maleic acid, maleic anhydride or fumaric acid with semi-drying and drying fats and oils, such as linseed oil, wood oil and ricin oil. These adducts are generally known as maleate oil or maleate resin.
As component III, known curable co-condensation products of the phenoplastic and / or aminoplastic type that are water-soluble at room temperature can be considered, as can be obtained by known processes by reacting formaldehyde with phenols or urea or melamine.
Urea and melamine-formaldehyde condensation products are usually also etherified with lower aliphatic alcohols.
In addition to ammonia, water-soluble, organic, primary, secondary, tertiary, aliphatic mono- or polyamines, and also mono-, di-, trialkanolamines, or mixed alkylalkanolamines can be used for neutralization. Examples include: methylamine, ethylamine, dimethylamine, triethylamine, diethylenetriamine, dipropylenetriamine, mono-, di-, triethanolamine. Quaternary ammonium bases formed from these amines can also be used.
To improve the solubility of components I to IV, organic solvents compatible with components I to IV, e.g. aliphatic and aromatic alcohols, glycols, polyglycols, glycol ethers and polyglycol ethers can be used. The organic solvents can be used up to a content of 10 percent by weight, calculated on water. In many cases, however, it is also possible to do without a solvent. The solvents are always used where they promote the solubility of components I to IV in water, increase the stability of the coating agent and have a favorable effect on the leveling or the layer thickness.
Sometimes it is advantageous to use a small amount of 0.5% 0 to 5%, based on water, of a water-immiscible organic solvent, e.g.
add aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, higher alcohols, ketones, esters or glycol esters to the electrophoresis bath. Such an additive improves the flow of the deposited coating, stabilizes the bath and increases the layer thickness.
The components can be combined in any order and, depending on the nature of the components used, can be carried out at room temperature or at a slightly elevated temperature that does not exceed 1000C. It is also possible first to use aqueous solutions, e.g. with a dry resin content of 60 percent or more, which can be diluted with water as required.
Depending on the intended use, the usual auxiliaries and additives such as leveling agents, stabilizers and the like can also be used in the coating agents.
The coating agents according to the invention can also be pigmented and the usual extenders and fillers can be added. The content of pigment and filler should not exceed 50% of the binder content.
For the electrophoretic deposition, the coating compositions according to the invention are diluted with water to such an extent that the solids content is not more than 40%, but preferably between 4 and 20%. The binder content of the aqueous resin solutions used for the electrophoretic deposition can be up to 37%, but preferably between 3 and 20%.
The electrophoretic deposition of the coatings from the coating agents is now carried out in such a way that an electrical potential is switched between two electrodes which are introduced into the coating agent.
The procedure is such that the workpiece to be painted is connected as the anode. The inside wall of the pool expediently forms the cathode at the same time. The current density is chosen in such a way that the desired paint film density is achieved in a given time. The level of the DC voltage to be applied results from the character of the paint to be deposited, the distance and size of the electrodes.
The coating compositions according to the invention can be diluted with water. They are characterized by the fact that the constantly circulated, dilute solution remains stable and does not separate even when the current passes for a long time.
The coating compositions according to the invention produce extremely uniform electrophoretic deposits with good corrosion resistance, which are particularly advantageous for workpieces with complex surfaces.
The wrap around edges and corners is very satisfactory and the penetration of the lacquer layer into hollow bodies is surprisingly good. Compared to those whose binders are either only acrylate resins or only alkyd resins or maleate resins, the coatings, coatings, paints or varnishes produced with the coating agent according to the invention have increased elasticity, better adhesion to the coated workpiece and improved temperature resistance, especially when overburning or undercooling .
Although component I does not harden on its own, it crosslinks in combination with II and III to form an extremely hard stoved coating. The electrophoretic deposits obtained can be used either as primers or as single-layer coatings. The coatings are expediently baked at 150 to 2200C for 30 to down to 5 minutes.
The following examples are intended to explain the concept of the invention in more detail without restricting it. All percentages relate to percentages by weight, and all parts are parts by weight.
