Abstract

Baking finishes for electrical wire insulation and air-drying finishes for wood, such as on bowling alleys and bowling pins, are provided by aqueous dispersions of the ammonium salts of interpolymers derived from a mixture of monomers consisting of (A) 30% to 80% by weight of acrylonitrile, (B) 1.5% to 15% by weight of an alpha-olefinic monocarboxylic acid such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, phenyl acrylic acid, or crotonic acid; and (C) 15 to 65% by weight of an ester of an acid of (B) with a saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohol having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms (see Group IV (a)). Heat hardenable phenol-, urea, or melamine-aldehyde resins may be added. The compositions may contain pigments, fillers, extenders, finely divided hydrous silicates, e.g. bentonite or montmorillonite, dyes, compatible resins and plasticizers.ALSO:Stable gelation-resistant aqueous interpolymer dispersions are prepared by the aqueous emulsion polymerization of a homogeneous mixture of monomers consisting of (a) 30 to 80% by weight of acrylonitrile; (b) 1.5 to 15% by weight of an alpha-olefinic monocarboxylic acid, such as acrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, phenyl acrylic and crotonic acids; and (c) 15 to 65% by weight of an ester of an acid of (b) with a saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohol having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms and then forming an ammonium salt of the interpolymer by neutralization of at least 10% by weight of the acidic (b) component with ammonium hydroxide to provide the aqueous dispersion with a pH value within the range of 5.5 to 8.0, heating the resulting ammoniacal dispersion at a temperature in the range of 45 DEG to 95 DEG C. for a period of 5 minutes to 4 hours and then cooling to a temperature below 30 DEG C. Polymerization may be carried out in the presence of a mixture of potassium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite as a catalyst and sodium lauryl sulphate as an emulsifier. The dispersions may be modified by the addition of water-dilutable, heat-hardenable aldehyde condensation resins, such as phenol/formaldehyde, urea/formaldehyde, melamine/formaldehyde and urea/melamine/formaldehyde resins and bentonite and montmorillorite clays. The dispersions may be used in coating and impregnating applications for both fibrous and non-fibrous materials.
