1289228 Hardening synthetic resins LONZA Ltd 29 May 1970 [30 May 1969] 26130/70 Headings C3G and C3P Hardened synthetic resins are prepared by treating with ionizing radiation a mixture of (a) a chlorinated polyolefin or chlorinated rubber and (b) a halogen-free olefinically unsaturated monomer in a weight ratio of 20 : 80 to 80 : 20. Specified polyolefins are polyethylene, polypropylene and polybutene. Specified monomers are acrylic compounds, vinyl alkanoates, diallyl phthalate and styrene. The mixtures may also contain plasticizers, fillers and pigments; and may be heated before, during or after hardening, optionally in the presence of free radical formers such as peroxides and azo compounds. The mixtures may be used for coating metal, wood, paper and synthetic materials. Many suitable monomers are listed and examples describe the hardening with radiation of mixtures of (1-4 and 6) chlorinated polypropylene and n-butyl acrylate with and without ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, styrene, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate or n-butyl methacrylate; chlorinated polyethylene and n-butyl acrylate with and without ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or vinyl acetate; or chlorinated rubber and n-butyl acrylate with or without ethylene glycol dimethacrylate; and (5) chlorinated polypropylene, n-butyl acrylate and epoxidized soya bean oil or butyl glycidyl ether.
