Abstract

An emulsion polymerized latex is produced by polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence, as sole emulsifier, of at least 10% by wt. of a salt of a partial ester of a copolymer of maleic anhydride and a vinylidene aromatic compound. The monomer may be styrene with optionally dibutyl fumarate, ethyl acrylate or up to 60% by wt. of butadiene, or methyl methacrylate. The emulsifier may be of molecular wt. 1000-20,000 and have the repeating units <FORM:1118725/C3/1> <FORM:1118725/C3/2> where groups of Formula I constitute 20-100% of the total groups, R is a C1- 20 organic radical, R1 is H, a C1- 5 alkyl radical, halogen or nitrile group, Ar is a radical of 1 or 2 benzene rings and X is an ammonium (which may be substituted) or an alkali metal ion. The emulsifier may comprise an aq. solution of the 2-butoxyethanol partial ester of a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer and ammonium hydroxide. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of an aq. solution of ammonium persulphate and sodium bisulphite as initiator.ALSO:A cellulosic substrate is coated with an emulsion polymerised latex produced by polymerising an ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence as sole emulsifier of at least 10% by wt. of a salt of a partial ester of a copolymer of maleic anhydride and a vinylidene aromatic compound. The monomer may be styrene with optionally dibutyl fumerate, ethyl acrylate or up to 60% by wt. of butadiene or methyl methacrylate. The latex may contain a siloxone polymer. The substrate may be a paper cup or plate, or a laminated cellulosic paper substrate.
