Abstract

A copolymer latex comprises a dispersion of a copolymer prepared by emulsion polymerization in an aqueous acid material of a monomeric material containing from 20 to 90% of monomer of at least one aliphatic conjugated diene, from 0.5 to 20% of at least one copolymerizable partial alkyl ester of an unsaturated polybasic acid or anhydride of the acid, the alkyl group containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms and the balance being from 10 to 75% of at least one monoolefinic monomer other than the ester. The preferred conjugated diene may be butadiene, isoprene,2-3-diemethyl butadiene, piperylene,2-neopentyl butadiene, 2-chlorobutadiene, 2-cyanobutadiene and others. Specified partial esters are the methyl or ethyl monoesters of fumaric, maleic, glutaconic, citraconic, itaconic, presaconic and aconitic acids-the monomethyl ester of itaconic acid being preferred. Preferred monolefinic monomers are nitriles, styrenes, and esters of an aliphatic alcohol containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and an acrylic or an alpha-substituted acrylic acid also vinyl naphthalene, vinyl pyridine, vinyl ethers and ketones and vinylidene chloride are also listed. The latex may also contain from 0.5 to 5% of a copolymerizable olefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid. The usual emulsifying agents e.g. the sodium salt of ethylene benzene sulphonate, chelating agents e.g. ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, peroxide type indicators e.g. potassium persulphate and modifiers e.g. 17-dodecyl mercaptan may be present.ALSO:Fibrous articles comprise a unified mass of non-woven fibrous material internally bonded with a unifying composition comprising a copolymer prepared by emulsion polymerisation in an aqueous acid medium of a monomeric material containing from 20 to 90% of at least one aliphatic conjugated diene, from 0.5 to 20% of at least one partial alkyl ester of an unsaturated polybasic acid or anhydride thereof, the alkyl group containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms and the balance being from 10 to 75% of at least one monoolefinic monomer other than the partial ester (see Division C3). The fabrics may be made from fibres such as cotton, rayon, nylon, and polyester as well as applied to unified paper packings e.g. creped masking tape base, rope tape stock, and flow-tensile flatback base. In a typical example (II) sheets of creped masking tape base are saturated with a copolymer latex, squeezed, forced and cured - the copolymers being (a) butadiene/acrylonitrile / monomethyl itaconate (b) butadiene / acrylonitrile / itaconic acid (c) butadiene / acrylonitrile / methacrylic acid (d) butadiene / styrene / monomethyl itaconate (e) butadiene / styrene / itaconic acid (g) butadiene / styrene / methacrylic acid (g) butadiene / acrylonitrile / styrene / with monomethyl itaconate or itaconic acid or methacrylic acid.
