[Class 2 (iii)] Coating-agents, priming and knifing compositions and putties contain as a binding agent an aqueous dispersion of a polyvinyl compound, a resin soap and a chemically drying film-forming substance. Specified polyvinyl compounds which may be used alone or as mixtures or interpolymers are polyvinyl esters, ethers, or chloride, polystyrene, esters of polyacrylic and methacrylic acids, and polyisobutylene; and in examples, polyaciylic acid methyl and ethyl esters, polyvinyl octadecyl ether, an interpolymer of octadecyl vinyl ether and vinyl ethers of an alcohol mixture obtained by reduction of coconut oil, an interpolymer of isohexylic acid vinyl ester, vinyl chloride and acrylic acid ethyl ester, and an interpolymer of isohexylic acid vinyl ester and vinyl chloride. Specified film-forming substances are linseed and tung oils ; polymerization products of butadiene (alone or with olefines or arylolefines, e.g. styrene) or of cracking products of hydrocarbon mixtures rich in hydrogen; drying oils obtained by treating aliphatic or hydroaromatic hydrocarbons with acid chlorides, e.g. phosgene, and aluminium chloride; condensation products of crotonaldehyde; resins from polyhydric alcohols, polybasic carboxylic acids and drying oils e.g. linseed and tung oils, or the fatty acids forming the basis of the drying oils, and tall oil or train oil fatty acids colophony boiled with linseed or wood oil; and in examples, a condensation product of phthalic acid, glycerine and linoleic acid or tall oil; a drying oil obtained by condensation of crotonaldehyde in the presence of methyl vinyl ketone; a mixture of the said condensation product and drying oil with a condensation product of colophony, maleic acid and glycerine ; and a drying oil obtained by polymerizing a mixture of butadiene and the higher olefines obtained by cracking paraffin oil. Specified resin soaps are the alkali salts of colophony and copals. Further additional substances which may be added are resins, high molecular weight fatty acids, organic solvents, softening agents and pigments ; in examples, a resin oil obtained in the distillation of colophony, chloro-rubber, sperm oil fatty acids, benzene, toluene, xylene, a high-boiling fraction of turpentine oil, hydrogenated turpentine oil, turpentine oil, esterified .tall oil, methyl cyclohexanol, cyclohexyl acetate, ethyleneglycol methyl acetate, coal tar or stearin pitch, glue, sodium naphthalene sulphonate, boric and salicylic acids, lead-manganese, driers, cobalt naphthenate, kaolin, whiting, iron oxide red, and titanium white. In one example, a putty which does not smear glass is made from 31À8 parts by weight of an aqueous dispersion of polyacrylic acid methyl ester, of water, 15À9 of resin soap, 28 of a solution of a condensation product of phthalic acid, linoleic acid and glycerine in toluene or xylene, 63À6 of a resin oil obtained in the distillation of colophony, 17À8 of sperm oil fatty acids and 827 of whiting.
