Abstract

Resinous materials are obtained by polymerizing styrene in the presence of an isomerized rubber obtained by heating raw crepe rubber with a phenol and an isomerizing agent. The treated rubber and styrene may be dissolved in xylene, dipentene or coal tar naphtha and heated to 140 DEG C. with benzoyl peroxide, or the solution may be emulsified in water with sodium alkyl sulphate and heated to 30 DEG C. with potassium persulphate, the dispersed phase separated and washed with water and acetone. The product may be dissolved in petroleum spirit and is miscible with linseed stand oils. An anti-corrosive paint comprises a solution of the resin in xylene, chlorinated diphenyl and zinc dust. Specifications 498,311, 539,641 and 541,899, [all in Group V], are referred to.ALSO:Isomerized rubber is prepared by heating crepe rubber, phenol and phosphoric acid under reflux at 180 DEG to 182 DEG C. for several hours. The mass is dissolved in toluene, and the product precipitated by methyl alcohol and the volatile impurities distilled off. The rubber may be heated with styrene and a polymerization catalyst to yield a resinous product suitable for use in coating compositions. Specifications 498,311, 539,641, and 541,899 are referred to.
