Abstract
Soluble petroleum resins are prepared by blending a C5 steam-cracked petroleum fraction, relatively free of cyclopentadienes and dimers and boiling up to 38 DEG C., with from 10 to 50 per cent of cyclopentadiene dimers, and polymerizing the blend in liquid phase at from -20 DEG to 90 DEG C., preferably 0 DEG to 75 DEG C., in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The C5 fraction may be obtained from a C5 to C9 fraction boiling up to 140 DEG C., obtained from a steam-cracked unsaturated petroleum oil by heating the fraction, e.g. between 100 DEG and 220 DEG F., to dimerise the cyclopentadiene, separating the dimers, for example as the bottom fraction of a distillation tower and distilling to obtain a mixture of the C5 fraction boiling at up to 38 DEG C., and isoprene, which may then be separated, e.g. by extractive distillation with acetone. In the polymerization, which may be continuous, the catalyst may be added continuously or batchwise and the products washed with water, caustic or dilute sulphuric acid, or the catalyst residues precipitated as a methanol complex and filtered off. The polymeric resin, stripped free of unreacted components or low molecular weight products, may be used as a base for paints, varnishes, inks and floor tiles.
