Abstract
High polymers of cis-polyisoprene are made by polymerizing isoprene in an inert hydrocarbon diluent with an organolithium catalyst and, reducing the induction period by heating the polymerizable mixture for a period of at least 5 minutes and at a temperature, e.g. 60 DEG to 110 DEG C., insufficient to convert more than one weight per cent of isoprene to the polymer, and then reducing the temperature, e.g. below 60 DEG C., and completing the polymerization. The Specification contains a long list of catalysts. The exemplified catalyst is lithium-methylnaphthalene. The organolithium catalyst is generally formed in a polar solvent which is replaced by a hydrocarbon prior to incorporation in the polymerizable mixture. The polymer is recovered from the polymerizate by conventional techniques, e.g. addition of an alcohol, and an antioxidant. The polymerizate prior to treatment for recovery of the polymer may be aftertreated to introduce functional groups such as -COOH, or -SH.
