Abstract

A linear copolymer derived from (A) at least one diene consisting of 1,3-butadiene or isoprene and (B) at least one vinyl-substituted aromatic compound, and in which the diene and aromatic compound are randomly distributed in the copolymer and in which the diene content of the copolymer is characterized by (1) a cis-1,4 structure of at least 30% and a 1,2 structure not in excess of 12%, where the diene is butadiene or piperylene, or (2) a cis-1,4 structure of at least 70% and a 3,4 structure not in excess of 15% and substantially no 1,2 content where the diene is isoprene, is made by the following copolymerization process using a lithium-based catalyst. During the copolymerization reaction the monomer ratio is maintained constant by incremental additions of the faster polymerizing diene monomer. The copolymer may be telomerized by the slower polymerizing monomer by continuing the polymerization after the last incremental addition of the faster polymerizing monomer. The process may be effected continously. The copolymer may be compounded with 40 to 200 parts by weight of carbon black, and 15 to 130 by weight of plasticizer per 100 parts by weight of copolymer. The composition may also include natural rubber, ethylene-propylene rubber, rubbery emulsion copolymers of butadiene and styrene, rubbery copolymers of isoprene having a cis-1,4 content of at least about 90%, or rubbery polymers of butadiene having a cis-1,4 content of at least about 30% and a 1,2 content not in excess of 12%. The vulcanized compositions are used as treads in pneumatic tyres. The lithium-based catalyst is either metallic lithium or a lithium hydrocarbon. The Specification contains an extensive list of lithium hydrocarbons. The polymerization may be effected in bulk or in a hydrocarbon solution. Specified vinyl-aromatics are styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, beta-methyl styrene, para-methyl styrene, and 1- and 2-vinyl naphthalene. The copolymers are recovered from the polymerizate by conventional techniques, e.g. methanol plus an antioxidant.
