Abstract
Resins obtained by polymerizing a steam-cracked petroleum distillate, boiling in the range 50 DEG to 500 DEG F., are hydrogenated in the presence of a resin solvent containing at least one aromatic hydrocarbon. The steam-cracked petroleum fraction, preferably of boiling range 100 DEG to 400 DEG F., containing mixtures of homologues of mono- and di-olefines, aromatic hydrocarbons and cyclic mono- and di-olefines and preferably heat-soaked, e.g. at 180 DEG to 240 DEG F. to dimerize the cyclodienes which are removed, is polymerized with a Friedel-Craft catalyst. The resin, dissolved in a solvent containing aromatic hydrocarbon (1 part) such as benzene, toluene and xylene, with non-aromatic material (0 to 10 parts based on the aromatic hydrocarbon) such as saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons and/or naphthenic hydrocarbons, e.g. pentane to nonane, and cyclohexane, is hydrogenated, preferably at 100 DEG to 800 DEG F., under a pressure of 500 to 600 p.s.i.g. in the presence of a Group VI or Group VIII metal or compound catalyst, e.g. nickel and the product purified by stripping. The catalyst may be on a granular support and the hydrogenation may be continuous. The resins are of improved colour, substantially water white, of a softening point of 185 DEG to 250 DEG F. and a iodine number of 50 to 400.
