Abstract
Aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from feedstocks also containing olefins, but from which more unsaturated hydrocarbons have been removed, by solvent extraction with pyrrolidone or a derivative thereof. The feed may be a cracked gasoline or low temperature carbonization gasoline. The highly unsaturated materials are removed by fuller's earth, polymerization catalysts or, preferably, mild hydrogenation, e.g. using a nickel or palladium catalyst at below 100 DEG C. The solvent employed may be pyrrolidone or an N-alkyl, N-hydroxyalkyl or N-acyl derivative in amounts of 5-20 vols. per vol. of aromatics in the feed and the solvent may contain 15-30% of water. An anti-solvent is preferably used, e.g. a hydrocarbon fraction boiling below 60 DEG C. the volume ratio of aromatics to anti-solvent being between 1.2 and 0.5 and/or an extract reflux may be used.
