Abstract
Aromatic hydrocarbon fractions rich in single ring aromatic compounds and suitable for use as solvents or gasoline are obtained by subjecting an aromatic extract boiling between 300 and 600 DEG F. and having an aniline point below 50 to catalytic cracking at 800-1000 DEG F. and fractionating the products to isolate a fraction boiling below 200-250 DEG F. Catalysts specified comprise natural and activated clays or synthetic alumina-silica gels the catalyst being used in the form of a fixed bed or suspended in the hydrocarbon vapours. The aromatic fraction may be obtained by extraction of kerosene, gasoline, or a cracked condensate, from which condensed ring aromatics have been previously removed, with sulphur dioxide and evaporating off the solvent. In examples a sulphur dioxide extract of kerosene having an upper boiling point of 568 DEG F. and aniline point 43 is cracked at 861 DEG F. with a feed rate of 0.6. Specification 548,760, [Group III], is referred to.
