Abstract
Aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from non-aromatic hydrocarbons by solvent extraction with a solvent comprising methyl alcohol, ethylene glycol in an amount of 40-80% by weight of the total solvent and optionally water. Aromatic hydrocarbons boiling in the range 75-280 DEG C. may be separated from non-aromatics boiling in the range 65-280 DEG C. The feed may be mixtures of specific hydrocarbons or oils such as crude petroleum, cracked petroleum, reformed petroleum, hydrocracked coal or carbonizated coal. Preferably, a tower having alternate mixing and settling zones is used, the solvent being introduced at the top, hydrocarbon feed at a mid-point and a reflux of separated aromatics at or near the bottom. Solvent is separated from the extract and raffinate by addition of water and then separated from water by distillation; up to 4% by weight of water may remain in the solvent. Extraction is effected at atmospheric pressure up to 40 DEG C. and 1-10 atmospheres up to 130 DEG C.ALSO:Aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from non-aromatic hydrocarbons by solvent extraction with a solvent comprising methyl alcohol, ethylene glycol in an amount of 40-80% by weight of the total solvent and optionally water.
