Abstract
Hydrocarbon mixtures comprising cyclohexane, benzene and optionally n-hexane and also one or more non-aromatic azeotropic-forming hydrocarbons particularly methylcyclopentane, 2.4- or 2.2-dimethylpentane, are separated into their constituents by first adjusting the proportions of the benzene to the non-aromatic compounds so that just sufficient benzene is present to form a minimum constant boiling mixture with all the non-aromatic azeotropic-forming hydrocarbons present and then distilling the mixture whereby the constant boiling mixture of benzene and non-aromatic hydrocarbons is recovered overhead while substantially pure cyclohexane is recovered as bottoms, the overhead fractions then being subjected to further distillation, solvent extraction, &c. to recover the benzene. The hydrocarbon mixtures may be naphtha fractions obtained from coal tar, petroleum, products produced in the cracking and destructive hydrogenation of oils. Where the feed-stock contains olefines these should first be removed by mild hydrogenation. Specifications 606,797 and 606,798 are referred to.
