Abstract
329,671. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Jan. 18, 1929. Mineral and tar oils and waxes.-Paraffin-containing tars are worked up by removing the wax without distillation, then subjecting to a condensing process e.g. with metal chlorides to form lubricating oils, and finally converting the products other than lubricating oils into low-boiling hydrocarbons, e.g. by cracking or destructive hydrogenation. For example, 100 lb. of brown coal tar obtained by low-temperature distillation as described in Specification 259,389, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], is mixed with 300 lb. of acetone, and cooled to - 10 or - 20‹ C. After separation of the 30 lb. of wax precipitated the oil is treated at 150 -200‹ C. with aluminium chloride, e.g. as described in Specifications 299,086 and 318,311. On distilling 30 lb. of highly viscous lubricating oil re. mains, and 40 lb. of water-white hydrocarbon B.P. 220-260‹ C., similar to gas oil passes over. The latter is treated with hydrogen at 450‹ C. and 200 atmospheres in presence of molybdenum trioxide and chromic acid; benzines B.P. 40-180‹ C. result. In the separation of the wax the acetone may be replaced by benzine, trichlorethylene, or mixtures of benzene and alcohol. The separated wax is treated with chromic and sulphuric acids to obtain a hard wax consisting of paraffin wax with about 60 per cent of montan wax and montanic acid; it may be used in polishing compositions or be oxidized to high molecular fatty acids.
