Abstract

Complexes are formed by contacting a mixture of organic compounds with urea or thiourea, and recycling part of the separated complexes to the remaining mixture. The process effects the separation of straight-chain compounds by complex formation with urea, or of branched-chain compounds by complex formation with thiourea. Diluents or solvents may be added to the reaction mixture and a saturated alcoholic solution of thiourea is mentioned. The complexes may be fractionated and selected fractions recycled or alternatively they may be decomposed and a selected fraction of the regenerated organic compound recycled, to enrich the feed in a particular type of compound. Normal compounds which form complexes with urea are listed in Specification 671,456 and branched-chain compounds forming complexes with thiourea in Specification 650,571. Complexes containing varying proportions of urea may be formed by varying the conditions of reaction. The complexes may be separated, as by filtration, and the organic compounds regenerated as described in Specification 671,456 (except that distillation of the complex with hot gases is not mentioned). The process may be particularly applied to the separation of hydrocarbon mixtures and may be used in separating the products of alkylation, cyclization and isomerization processes. Specifications 671,457 and 671,458 also are referred to.ALSO:Oils are refined by treating with urea or thiourea to form complexes with at least part of the oil, and recycling part of the separated complexes to the remaining mixture. The process effects the separation of straight chain hydrocarbons (forming complexes with urea, inert to thiourea) from branchel chain hydrocarbons (forming complexes with thiourea, inert to urea). Diluents or solvents may be added to the reaction mixture, and a saturated alcoholic solution of thiourea is mentioned. The complexes may be fractionated and selected fractions recycled or alternatively they may be decomposed and a selected fraction of the regenerated hydrocarbon recycled, to enrich the feed oil in a particular type of hydrocarbon. The complexes may be separated, as by filtration, and the hydrocarbons regenerated as described in Specification 671,456, (except that distillation of the complex with hot gases is not mentioned). The process may be applied to hydrocarbons which have been alkylated, cyclized or isomerized and may also be used to obtain high octane gasoline, high Diesel index fuel, and I.C. engine fuels of narrow boiling range. Specifications 671,457, 671,458 and 650,571 also are referred to.
