Abstract
Hydrocarbon polymers, particularly dicyclopentadiene and also liquid polymers are produced by subjecting a cyclopentadiene-containing cracked hydrocarbon fraction of petroleum origin having an initial boiling-point in the range of 15-30 DEG C. and a final boiling-point in the range of 50-70 DEG C. to a preliminary heat treatment at 70-120 DEG C., while maintaining the fraction in the liquid phase so that the cyclopentadiene is converted to its dimer and thereafter distilling the product to remove the dimer, and then subjecting the cyclopentadiene free cracked hydrocarbon fraction obtained overhead to a heat treatment at a temperature above the temperature of the preliminary heat treatment, and at superatmospheric pressure, and distilling the product to obtain separately a gasoline fraction and, boiling above said gasoline fraction, a hydrocarbon polymer fraction. The hydrocarbon fraction is preferably obtained by steam cracking a naphtha cut boiling in the range of 90-250 DEG C. at a pressure of atmospheric to 200 pounds per square inch. In an example, a 20-58 DEG C. cut from a steam cracked gasoline was heated to 100 DEG C. for 8 hours to dimerize the cyclopentadiene, the product was distilled, leaving the dicyclopentadiene as bottoms, and the overhead product being subjected to further heat treatment at 150-160 DEG C. for 6 hours at 290 lb. per square inch. The product was distilled at atmospheric pressure to recover unchanged gasoline as overheads, the bottoms being further distilled under reduced pressure to separate distilled polymer and resinous polymer fractions.
