Abstract

Cyclopentadiene is obtained by heating its dimer by direct contact with an inert liquid heating medium. This preferably boils or begins to boil at the decomposition temperature of the dimer and is a solvent for hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons or mixtures thereof, especially those obtained by cracking or fractionation of petroleum and other oils and having an initial boiling point of 190-250 DEG , especially 220-250 DEG C. The dimer may be heated in the liquid medium in a still under a reflux column operated so that the monomer distils. The dimer is preferably heated rapidly to well above its boiling point, e.g. 220-240 DEG C., at which temperature at least a substantial part of the liquid medium boils, the rate of feed being the same as that at which monomer is produced and removed. The liquid medium is periodically purified from the gummy by-products which dissolve therein. In an example, a hydrocarbon fraction boiling at 0-70 DEG C., and obtained by cracking gas oil, is stored until the cyclopentadiene is converted to dimer, and distilled up to 75 DEG C., the residue being fed to a still containing a gas oil fraction of initial boiling point 230 DEG C., kept boiling, monomer being collected.
