Abstract

Monomeric cyclopentadiene or a homologue is obtained from the dimer by cracking in the gas phase, to convert at least a major part into monomer, mixing with vapours of a stable inert liquid boiling in the range 160-360 DEG C., passing the mixture into a fractionating column and recovering pure monomer as overhead distillate. Suitable inert liquids are tetralin decalin, diethylbenzene, di- or tri-chloro-benzene, diphenyl ether or a petroleum fraction boiling above 200 DEG C. Dimer is preferably injected into the cracking reactor at the same rate as monomer is recovered. An automatic control may effect total reflux if the boiling point of the monomer is exceeded at the head of the fractionating column while simultaneously cutting off dimer supply. Dimer is preferably vaporized and cracked by introducing into a vertical tubular reactor at 200-400 DEG C. having a packing of copper or a copper alloy on which the dimer can vaporize.
