Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare dicyclopentadiene of high purity by an inexpensive simple process, by subjecting a 9C fraction obtained from the thermal decomposition of a liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. naphtha, kerosene or light oil, to the destructive distillation under heating, and dimerizing the resultant cyclopentadiene.
CONSTITUTION: A 9C fraction formed by the thermal decomposition of a liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. naphtha, kerosene of light oil, in the preparation of ethylene, is rectified at a temperature of 160°C or above and 300°C or below to prepare dicyclopentadiene. In more details, the 9C fraction is subjected to the destructive distillation to distill the dicyclopentadiene as cyclopentadiene, which is then dimerized to afford the aimed dicylopentadiene of high purity.
