Abstract

Cyclopentadiene is obtained by depolymerizing dicyclopentadiene by introducing it into a boiling indifferent liquid having a boilingpoint of at least 120 DEG C. at a speed which is not higher than the speed at which depolymerization proceeds, removing the cyclopentadiene formed as a vapour together with the vapour of the boiling indifferent liquid and rapidly cooling the vapour mixture. The indifferent liquid may be white spirit, tetrahydronaphthalene, decahydronaphthalene, diethylbenzene, anisole, phenetole, diphenyl ether, acetophenone, or benzyl acetate. The liquid is so chosen that the boiling-point agrees with the required reaction temperature which is preferably 170 DEG to 300 DEG C. Stabilizers such as hydroquinone or methylene blue may be added to the indifferent liquids.
