Abstract

Steroid compounds containing the group -COCH2- are brominated with 1,4-dioxan perbromide thereby converting the group into -COCHBr-. The process may be carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. 1,4-dioxan. The dioxan perbromide may be formed in an excess of 1,4-dioxan and then reacted with the steroid compounds without isolation. In the examples methyl 3a - acetoxy - 12 - keto - 11a - bromocholanate and the corresponding 11b -bromocholanate are obtained from methyl 3a -acetoxy - 12 - ketochloanate, 11,23 - dibromohecogenin acetate is obtained from hecogenin acetate, 3a - acetoxy - 17a - hydroxy - 11,20-diketo - 21 - bromopregnane is obtained from 3a - acetoxy - 17a - hydroxy - 11,20 - diketopregnane, and 2 - bromocholestan - 3 - one is obtained from cholestan-3-one.
