Abstract

Phenols are separated from distillates containing hydrocarbons and phenols of closely related boiling points by subjecting the distillates to fractional distillation in the presence of steam. The hydrocarbon components are thereby distilled off in the form of their water azeotropes leaving a residue rich in phenols. The process may be carried out continuously by running the given mixture down a column up which steam is blown. Alternatively, steam may be blown through the mixture while it is in a still surmounted by a fractionating column. Instead of blowing in steam, the still may contain a large proportion of water in addition to the given mixture. In all cases the water separated from the condensed azeotropes may be returned to the process. When the given mixture contains paraffinic and aromatic hydrocarbons, fractions boiling within a range of 5 DEG C are treated individually in which case the paraffins will be concentrated in the fractions coming off in the final stages of the steam fractionation. Coal tar naphtha of boiling range 175 DEG -195 DEG C. and containing 33 per cent. tar acids, 5 per cent. tar bases and 62 per cent hydrocarbons was placed in a still with twice its volume of water and submitted to distillation using a column and dephlegmator. The residue when separated from water comprised about 20 per cent. of the naphtha and contained 99.7 per cent. tar acids.
