Abstract

In the continuous distillation of coal tar the <PICT:0918003/III/1> low boiling fractions are removed in a column (4) operated at atmospheric pressure from which is side fraction (12) is taken consisting of naphthalene and wash oil and the latter is mixed with the non-reflux overhead (29) from a vacuum still (23), wherein the residue from the first column (4) are separated into anthracene oils and pitch, and the mixture is fractionated in a column (13) to obtain overhead naphthalene having a softening point of at least 74 DEG C. and as bottoms a wash oil with a naphthalene content of 3% or less.
