Abstract
17,397. Callender, W. M. Feb. 24. Hydrocarbon oils, cracking.-Hydrocarbons resembling isoprene are obtained by passing the mixed vapours of turpentine and an oil or spirit having about the same boiling-point as turpentine through a heated copper &c. tube, and separating from the product the portion that distils up to 70‹ C. A suitable oil is paraffin oil, three parts of which may be mixed with one of turpentine and vaporized. The residue from the fractional distillation may be repeatedly passed through the heated tube and the products fractionated as before. According to the Provisional Specification, coal tar or some of its constituents, such as cumarone, may be dissolved in turpentine, the solution distilled, and the distillate mixed with the paraffin oil &c.
