Abstract

1386270 Cracking; modifying oils; pitches; coking KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 29 Dec 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 60172/72 Heading C5E Oils boiling above 150‹ C. and obtained as byproducts from the production of olefines, e.g. by thermal cracking, are heated in the absence of hydrogen or other reagents to 400-600‹ C. at a pressure of 20 to 200 kp. cm.<SP>-2</SP> for 10 to 1200 seconds, the product is separated by distillation into thermally stabilized oil fractions and residual fractions, and these residual fractions are heated at 300-480‹ C. at a pressure from normal to 50 kp. cm.<SP>-2</SP> for 1 to 10 hours to provide pitch fractions. Light fractions boiling up to 400‹ C. may be removed from the product of the second heat treatment. The first heat treatment decomposes unsaturated radicals and splits off side chains to give a highly aromatic product. In the second heat treatment, more side chains are removed, and condensation to polycyclic aromatics occurs. Pitches obtained by the process of the invention are suitable as raw material for making needle coke. The thermally stabilized fractions can be used to make insulating oils and solvents; naphthalene and methylnaphthalene can be separated from them.
