1,243,896. Pitch and tar. KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO K.K. 5 Nov., 1969 [6 Nov., 1968], No. 54280/69. Heading C5E. A process for producing pitch and tar suitable as a raw material for the production of. carbon products or for blending with synthetic resins comprises introducing an oil feed stock having an aromatic content greater than 80%, into heat medium having a temperature in the range of from 1300‹ to 2500‹ C. to subject the oil to thermal cracking for a period of from 0.001 to 0.1 seconds at a temperature in the range of from 900‹ to 1500‹ C. under a pressure of from 300 mmHg absolute to 20 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> gauge, The feedstock may be a washing oil or anthracene oil from carbonization of coal, or a light cracked petroleum oil or tar. The heat medium may be steam or a flame.
