Abstract
A refractory material is made by heat-treating a bituminous distillation product of coal, petroleum or wood, having a boiling-point in the range 150 DEG to 400 DEG C. (preferably a coal tar oil) at a temperature between 150 DEG and 500 DEG C. and at a pressure of at least two atmospheres absolute, and admixing the so-treated product with a refractory ceramic material. The heat-treated product, prior to the admixing step, may be mixed with dehydrated tar or coal tar oils, or may be distilled, e.g. under vacuum with steam, to produce pitch which may be blended with oils. Polymerizing substances or gases may be added to the distillation product before, during or after the heat treatment to increase the carbon yield when the mixed product and ceramic is baked, e.g. as described in Specification 676,290.
