Abstract

A coal having a high content, e.g. 40%, of volatile substances, or a lignite, is carbonized in a fluidized bed at a temperature of less than 700 DEG C., e.g. 500 DEG C. The tar produced by the carbonisation is distilled. The pitch resulting from the distillation is recovered and carbonized at a temperature above 450 DEG C. and preferably of between 500 DEG and 700 DEG C. Specifically, a pitch, non-distillable at 350 DEG C., was obtained from a soft coal (International Classification 711) and carbonized at 1000 DEG C. after the temperture had been raised at 0.5 DEG C. per minute up to 500 DEG C., and at 3 DEG C. per minute up to 1000 DEG C. to produce a pitch coke.ALSO:An active carbon which is only slightly graphitizable is made by the successive steps of carbonization of a coal having a high content of volatile substances or of a lignite in a fluidized bed at a temperature of less than 700 DEG C., distillation of the tar produced by the carbonization, recovery of the pitch resulting from the distillation, carbonization of the pitch at a temperature above 450 DEG C. and preferably of between 500 DEG and 700 DEG C., cooling of the mass, and recovery of the carbon. The carbon is stated to possess high purity, low electrical conductivity and high activity; it may be used as a reducing agent in electro-metallurgical and chemical processes.
