Abstract
A carbonaceous material, for example graphite is converted to diamond by a method comprising (a) placing the material in a high pressure, high temperature apparatus (see Division B1-B2, Specification 1,048,976), (b) subjecting the material to a pressure at least as high as the pressure of the solid diamond-solid graphiteliquid carbon triple point T2 in Fig. 7; (c) <PICT:1048971/C1/1> raising the temperature of the material so that the material is subjected to conditions of temperature and pressure above the line Th in Fig. 7, the maximum temperature applied to the material being less than the melting temperature of diamond at the operating pressure; (d) returning the material to normal conditions of temperature and pressure; (e) recovering diamond from the apparatus.
