Abstract

PURPOSE: To modify low-quality coal to such a degree that it is suitable as a coke raw material for iron manufacture, by making low-quality coal which is previously ground, with high wxygen content into a slurry using tar oil as a solvent, decomposing thermally and extracting it under specific conditions so that the coal is partially converted into a solvent-soluble component.
CONSTITUTION: After low-quality coal with high oxygen content is ground, it is made into a slurry having a wieght ratio of solvent/coal of ≥2 using a tar oil having a bolling point of 200W400°C as a solvent. The slurry is thermally decomposed and extracted in an atmosphere of an inert gas at 10W50kg/cm2 at 380W 430°C, the low-quality coal is partially converted into a solvent-soluble component, an undissolved residue is not separated or separated partially, the prepared substance is subjested to vacuum distillation, and the solvent is recovered, to give modified coal or caking coal.
