Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high-quality coke without equipping an additional device, by feeding powdered coal blended with a specific amount of bituminous substances into a carbonization furnace wherein a coking chamber is tapered so that the width of its bottom are wider than that of its top, and by densifying the powder coal under its own weight due to softening and melting of the bituminous substances.
CONSTITUTION: 1W30 wt.% of bituminous substances having a softening point not higher than 300°C and a H/C ratio of 0.50W1.70 is added to powdered coal to give a blended coal 2 with an adjusted volatile content of 20W40 wt.%, preferably 25W40 wt.% based on a dry weight. The coal 2 is fed into the carbonization furnace 1, where in a coking chamber is partially or wholly tapered in such a way that the width of its bottom is wider than that of its top, and carbonized. When coke is lowered in quality because of insufficient densification of the powdered coal in the upper part of the coking chamber, the molded coal blending method should be applied only in the upper part or high-quality blended coal should be used.
