Abstract

PURPOSE: Low-quality coal and a binder are kneaded at a temperature higher than the softening point of the binder and formed by compression, then added to mixed coal and subjected to dry distillation to produce coke for blast furnace with sufficient strength and advantage in costs.
CONSTITUTION: A combination of (A) less than 90wt% low-quality coal and (B) more than 10wt% a binder of high polymer bitumen that is rich in aromaticity and high in softeining point such as coal pitch is kneaded at a temperature higher than the softening point of the binder and formed by compression. The resultant formed coal is added to a coal mixture and subjected to dry distillation to produce the objective coke.
EFFECT: Particles of the low-quality coal are covered with the binder on the surface to improve the softening and fusing behaviors during the dry distillation, resulting in increase in conversion into coke. Further, the compression formation promotes the impregnation of the binder into particles of the low-quality coal to increase the compatibility with each other and improve the conversion into coke. Thus, without using bituminous coal in the formed coal, the resultant coke has sufficient strength as the one for blast coke.
