Abstract
578,336. Composition fuel. CAMPBELL, R. C. April 6, 1944, No. 20378/43. Drawings to Specification. [Class 50] A compressed fuel is made up of fibrous or cellulose material impregnated with a bituminous or resinous ingredient and a combustion retardant. Wood fibres, sawdust, straw, peat or bagasse &c. bitumen, resin or gum, or wood or coal tar pitch, calcium oxide or chloride, brickdust, china clay, or flue dust or clinker, may be selected as components and after mixing heated to preferably 215‹-220‹F., compressed sufficiently to produce a specific gravity greater than one, and cooled to below the softening temperature of the impregnant with the pressure maintained. The apparatus may comprise a steam-jacketed worm conveyer delivering into a horizontal 2 in. diameter tube also jacketed, which receives at one end the ram of a stamping press and at the other is surrounded near the outlet end by a cold water jacket. Alternatively a number of 6 in. lengths of tubes may be mounted on a wheel for a dial feed arrangement, the speed of rotation of the wheel being such that when the last tube is filled the first is sufficiently cooled to permit of the contents being ejected as a hard briquette. In an example 90 per cent. by volume of sawdust, 6¢ per cent. of pitch and 3¢ per cent. of pulverized clinker are employed.
